St Martins Church, Birmingham The Bull Ring is the place where the original began in Birmingham. It was a church here for over eight hundred years.
Peter de Bermingham, who lived nearby, set up the first market here in 1166. It is possible that there is a place of worship that is simple, here at this time. However, the first church for which records exist was built around the year 1290, down by Peter, William. A sandstone figure of 1325, said to represent William, is in the present chapel guild. This figure is considered the oldest monument in existence, in Birmingham.
The majority of the original 1290 building was demolished to make way for the present church was built in 1873. Birmingham architect Alfred Chatwin, who also worked on the Houses of Parliament in London, was the designer.
In 2000, the interior of the church was modified to provide more light and make it more welcoming to visitors. Changes were again in 2003 with the restoration of the exterior. An arts cafed, health and healing center and private training is also added.
The name of St. Martin was a soldier who was born in Hungary in 316. For a chilly night, he rode to Amiens in France, where he had been sent, when he met a half-naked beggar huddled against a wall. Martin was so moved by the plight of the beggar, his immediate reaction was to take up his sword and cut the coat he wore in two, giving half to the beggar.
That night he had a dream in which Jesus appeared to him as the beggar and thank Martin for her clothes, in the response of the young soldier was baptized. Later, he left the army and became a weld of Christ, and became bishop of Tours in France. St. Martin is known for its poor service.
