It was released in 1989 as a basketball shoe high-top. The shoe is very high compared to other retail sneakers at the time. It became a sort of status symbol on the basketball courts in urban areas and possibly in the suburb of schools.

After the success of the basketball shoe, Reebok designed for football boots, tennis and track. Some models use a standard CO2 cylinder instead of the pump for reasons of weight.

Dominique Wilkins was the Reebok Pump original from 1989. The original pump is now known as Bringback pump.

CCM briefly offered a hockey skate with the pump it around 1995 but has been derided for its poor sustainability. The pump did not return to hockey until 2006, when Reebok (now owned CCM) has highlighted the 9K, 7K and 5K ice, goalie, and 8K line template that uses the pump as a mechanism customizable heel-FIT

pump technology is a low return. For example, DC Shoe Company introduced a series of snowboarding boots lined pump. 2006 / 2007 model include the judge, and boots Ghost Graphix. Reebok has also brought this line, with shoes being aware TPA and pump 2.0, which pump automatically as the user walks. They also have the original shoe manually operated pump mechanism available. Outside of sports shoes, Reebok continues to sell risen pump for use in its high-end hockey skates (sold under the "Rbk Hockey 'banner) to improve the heel lock and fill the negative space in the inside of the shoe. Popular Hockey NHL stars Sidney Crosby and Alexei Kovalev wear Reebok shoes featuring the pump.
