Like almost all newborn babies in the U.S. are quickly registered with the federal Administration Social Security (SSA), this branch of government collects the simplest database of baby names actually used in the U.S. United This database is available free at the SSA website and is both fun and surprisingly easy to use - in other words, a great resource for top 100 baby names.

Top 100 baby names - first names most popular

Did you know that the great names of three boys in 2006 were Jacob, Michael and Joshua, and top 3 maiden names were Emily, Emma and Madison? Well, maybe you, but what about the top 3 in 1960 or 1890?

Want to know the 1960s and 1890s big names? I'll tell you in a while, but read on to learn how to find and use the database you find top 100 baby names, so you can see the top 50 or even plateau 1,000 names for one year or decade. You can even see them listed by state.

Well, here you go: the first 3 names for boys in 1960 were David, Michael and James, and Mary's daughters, Susan and Linda, the first three names in 1890 for boys were John, William and James and for daughters Mary, Anna and Elizabeth.

Find the database name SSA Baby

It is easy to find the database and get your top 100 baby names, www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/ just type in the address bar of your browser, or you can search the database - in the website database Google SSA up # 1 when you search for "social" security baby names.

Using the database

The data base is surprisingly easy to use. Our government should get Thanks for providing such a friendly service for top 100 baby names. The main page gives you four different www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/ searches you can perform.

1. Popular names by year of birth - this report allows you to see more big names for one year, and you can ask for the exact statistics (percent of total births or births) should be indicated for each name. This report is to be used for the top 100 baby names.
2. Popularity of the name - this report allows you to see how popular a name has changed over time. Example, type "Michael" and ask to see over 100 year period, and see how they ranked each of the last 100 years. 4. Top 1000 names by decade - Just choose a decade and you will see the top 1000 names on average over the decade. This is your big picture view.

For each of these searches you fill one or two fields and click the OK button.

Tips for printing and copying

If you want to print a page of top 100 baby names, a useful tip is to select just the table name or names you want, then in the print dialog of your browser choose "- the browser keeps only the highlighted selection. Or you can simply print the entire page - they seem to come out formatted correctly. You can also choose names or a whole table and copy it to your clipboard (Ctrl-C in Windows) and then paste it into a word processor.
