Trail riding involves dealing with huge mounds of earth - formed by compacting mud - is sometimes called and "jump dirty." To do this kind of racing, the rider will have a heavier, more reinforced bike, and it will usually only have rear brakes, as the terrain is very rugged and difficult on the rider. There are many gaps in the mud and dirt that the rider has to deal with differences ranging anywhere from three feet to 20 feet. On average, the differences are about 12 feet.

The bikes are often short and light, allowing the jump and tricks such as spinning bikers will try. Some tips include popular Bunnyhop, air, grinding, fakies, manuals, wallrides, endoscopy, flashbacks, and gateways.
